In 2017 architect turned artist Sarah Evans launched Pencil on Paper focused on creating a series of pencil drawings of objects and food with a playful edge.
When drawing, Sarah’s subjects are commonplace, often with a distinct Britishness about them. Her intricate skill and attention to detail functions to create work that resembles a perfectly lit photograph. Instilling colour and energy into all of her work.
“It would be easy to assume that the purpose of realism in art is to draw a ‘copy’. However, for me, it is to examine the subject and remove it from its context. What does it evoke on its own? Like listening to a song and immediately being transported back to a specific moment in time. When you separate out the object and study it you begin to value it differently.
I choose objects that are meaningful to me or that I feel hold meaning we can all relate or connect to. I want to capture familiar rituals or nostalgic moments in an object."
