What Pencils Do I Use?

The Colour Pencils I Choose to Use

I often get asked what pencils I use. The answer is it varies but I my standard 'go to' colour pencil is Derwent Colour Soft Pencils. You will often see me using these in my Quick Draw videos or positioned next my drawings. These can be bought in sets of 12, 24, 36, 48 or 72 and even come in specific collections like their Skin Tones collection. These are great for beginners or professionals.

These pencils are wax based and therefore soft and easy to blend. I like to layer up the colours from light to dark to get a real sense of depth in my drawings. I will say that layering the colour can only be applied a limited number of times before a the build up of the wax prevents further application.

Another 'go to' colour pencil brand you will often see me using is Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. These are oil based which has a harder feel and point, allowing you more control and precision for finer detail. The oil base also allows you to blend them with solvents, like turpentine or white spirit.
